  1. Yeah, it is on purpose.

    For some reason – I am actually just a bit too young for that, really – I hold a strong sense of nostalgia over Pan Am. They did achieve much, and they were a big cultural icon – so that may be the simple explanation. At any rate, one of the fundamental laws of my settings is that they are all “parallel universes”, even settings that are “just like our own world”. The point of divergence of our timeline from that of the “real world” is that in our reality, Pan Am went out of business, while it continued to operate successfully in those other universes.

    If that makes any sense…?

    The science fiction stuff is a bit different, since it is not technically a parallel universe, so Pan Am is defunct in that setting, but of course Pan Colonial is a suitable alternative.
